Why resin works better on a patio than most people expect

A patio asks different things of a surface than a driveway does. There is no car to carry, so the build-up is shallower, but everything else gets harder: the threshold has to sit below the damp proof course, water has to run away from the house rather than towards it, and the finish has to stay safe underfoot when it is wet and shaded.

Resin-bound answers those better than slabs do. It drains through itself, so there is no ponding and no soakaway to dig. It has no joints, so nothing to re-sand and nowhere for weeds to seed. And it can be laid to a true level out from a set of garden doors, with a slim channel taking the water, which is very hard to achieve neatly in paving.

What affects the cost of a resin patio?

How much does a resin patio cost in Bath or Bristol?

Two things move the number more than the size does. The first is what is already there: a sound concrete base or an existing slab patio can often be prepared and overlaid, while soil, sand-laid slabs, or a base that moves has to come out and be rebuilt. The second is access.

Resin is mixed on site and barrowed to where it is laid, which is why rear gardens reached through a side alley or the house itself are workable for resin when a pallet delivery of slabs simply is not. It still costs labour to move, so a garden with no vehicle access will carry more of it. Steps, curves, and level thresholds add detail work, and detail work is where the finish is won.

Compare it against the other surfaces in our material guide, or see how the same finish looks on a drive on our resin driveways page. The survey is free either way.

Why Bath and Bristol homeowners choose us for resin patios

Resin punishes a bad base, and on a patio the consequences show up at the house wall rather than under a wheel. Laid to the wrong fall, water runs back at the brickwork. Laid too high, it bridges the damp proof course. Both are expensive to unpick and neither is visible until it rains properly.

We set the levels and the falls before anything decorative happens, and we are 20 minutes from both cities in Paulton, so a survey is a short drive and so is coming back.

No soakaway needed

Resin drains through itself, so an enclosed or low garden does not need one digging into it.

No joints, no weeds

One continuous surface, so there is nothing to re-sand each spring and no weed line to chase.

Level with your doors

We can run the finish out flat from garden doors with a slim channel, kept clear of the damp proof course.

How we install a resin patio that lasts

Over 500 surfaces laid across the South West, South Wales, and the Thames Valley, from Georgian terraces in Bath to walled Victorian gardens in Bristol. The sequence below is what keeps a patio flat, dry, and safe underfoot.

We look at the ground, the access, the thresholds, and where water currently goes, then hold aggregate samples against your own stone in daylight. Fixed written quote, itemised.

Existing slabs or soil out, excavation to the depth the ground needs, and a compacted sub-base built to fall away from the house. Sound concrete can often be prepared and kept.

Falls set, edge restraints fitted, steps formed, and any drainage channel installed along the house so the finish can sit level with the doors without bridging the damp course.

Resin and aggregate mixed on site in weighed batches, barrowed in, and trowelled to an even depth in one continuous pour so there is no visible join across the patio.

Left to cure, then swept, edges checked, and walked round with you. Foot traffic within a day, furniture after 48 hours, and no re-sanding to diary in for the spring.

What we find behind the house

The ground:

Rear gardens hide more surprises than front drives do, because nobody has ever had to dig one up.

Under an old patio we routinely find slabs laid on sand over soil, or a concrete raft poured against the house with no fall on it at all. In Bath the hillside gardens bring water down from above; in Bristol the walled townhouse gardens are often lower than the house and hold what lands in them.

Our approach:

We fix the levels and the water before we think about the finish.

Falls are set to carry water away from the brickwork, the finished height is kept clear of the damp proof course, and where you want flush access from garden doors we run a channel along the house to take it. Access is planned too: resin is mixed on site and barrowed, so a garden reached only through a side alley is still workable.

The result:

A seamless terrace that drains itself and asks almost nothing of you.

No joints to re-sand, no weed line, no slabs rocking loose, and no green film in the shaded corner. The aggregate holds its colour for 25 years and more, and if the driveway is done in the same blend the whole property reads as one scheme.

Is a resin patio right for your garden?

Resin suits most gardens and it solves two problems slabs create. It gives you a continuous surface with no joints, so there is no annual re-sanding and no weed line, and it drains where it falls, so a low or enclosed garden does not need a soakaway digging into it.

It is less suitable if you want the look of natural stone up close, or on a terrace that will take heavy point loads such as a hot tub, where we would want to talk about the base first. We will say so at the survey rather than sell you the wrong thing.

Block paving patios: when a jointed surface is the better answer

Resin is not the right call on every patio, and we would rather say so. Block paving earns its place where the look wants pattern rather than a single tone, where the terrace has to tie back to an existing block driveway, and where you want the option to lift a section later without a visible repair.

On a patio the pattern choice changes. Herringbone exists to resist turning vehicles, so on foot traffic it is doing work nobody needs. Basketweave and stretcher bond read calmer underfoot, and a soldier course around the edge frames the space and holds the outer blocks in place. Circles and fans suit a seating area where the furniture sits in the middle of the terrace rather than against the house.

The trade-off is joints. Every joint is a line that needs kiln-dried sand keeping topped up, and in a shaded garden it is somewhere moss will try to establish. Permeable block paving handles its own drainage the way resin does, so on an enclosed garden it avoids the soakaway question just as neatly. If you want the pattern, take the maintenance. If you want to stop thinking about it, take resin.

Resin patio installers across Bath and Bristol

We install resin patios throughout Bath, Bristol, and the villages between them from our base in Paulton, roughly 20 minutes from both, which keeps surveys, deliveries, and aftercare quick.

Areas we cover for patios include:

  • Bathwick
  • Widcombe
  • Combe Down
  • Larkhall
  • Bathampton
  • Bathford
  • Freshford

Resin patios: your questions

Can resin be laid as a patio, or is it only for driveways?

Both. The same resin-bound system works for patios, terraces, and paths, and it is a common request in Bath and Bristol where a drive and a terrace need to read as one surface. The build-up is shallower on a patio because there is no vehicle load to carry.

Not normally. Resin-bound is permeable, so rain drains through the surface into the sub-base rather than running off. That is the main reason it suits enclosed and low-lying gardens where digging a soakaway would be awkward or expensive.

No more than any other hard surface, and usually less than smooth porcelain or sealed slabs. The aggregate finish is naturally textured, and because it drains through rather than holding a film of water on top, it stays grippier in the wet.

Yes, and it is one of the things resin does better than paving. We form the level and run a slim drainage channel along the house so the surface finishes flush with the threshold while staying clear of the damp proof course.

Sometimes. If the existing base is sound, stable, laid to a fall, and properly drained, we can prepare and prime it, which saves both time and money. Sand-laid slabs and anything that rocks underfoot have to come out, because resin laid over movement will crack.

All of both, plus the villages between them, from Lansdown and Bathwick through Saltford and Keynsham to Clifton and Bishopston. Paulton sits roughly 20 minutes from each.
